Samuel Burns Sculpture Installed on Southern Village Green


‘Redwood’ sculpture by Samuel Burns
CHAPEL HILL–Southern Village is participating in The Town of Chapel Hill’s Sculpture Visions program, a town-sponsored outdoor sculpture exhibition that runs from October 2009 to October 2010. Sculptor Samuel E. Burns installed “Redwood” today, an 18-foot-tall aluminum sculpture. It will remain on The Village Green for one year. The sculpture is lighted at night, so that it can viewed and enjoyed in the evening.

Most of the sculptures selected for the exhibition are on town property, but the village center developers, D.R. Bryan, John Fugo and Christine Edwards, believed that The Village Green would be an excellent venue for public art.

Burns is a North Carolina native who had a career working in construction, including exhibit design and construction at the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro. When he hurt his knee three years ago, he decided to devote himself to sculpture. Currently he lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he participates in an artist-in-residence program.

“I named this sculpture ‘Redwood’ because its form reminds me of the canopy of a giant redwood tree,” Burns said. The sculpture was recently on exhibit in Johnson City, Texas, and Burns drove it to Chapel Hill for the installation. “I am pleased with this location. The trees and the buildings in Southern Village frame it beautifully.”

Southern Village is home to another sculpture from the 2004-2005 Sculpture Visions program. ‘Golden Portal’, created by Wayne Trapp, is an eight-foot-high modern expression of the classic arch. The Golden Portal is in front of the building at 300 Market Street.
