Balanced Rock by Samuel E Burns

The Sculpture Ranch is located on 145 acres, about seven miles from Johnson City, a ranch once owned by President Lyndon B. Johnson in the Texas Hill Country, . The project includes a 14,000 sq. ft. Studios Building featuring 50 years of Benini’s paintings, as well as the work of guest artists, a fine arts library, and the Sculpture Ranch on the surrounding acres.
The Benini Galleries & Sculpture Ranch
The Mediterranean-like setting provides a showcase for contemporary talent as national and international artists are placing large-scale, contemporary sculpture on the grounds.

The term, Sculpture Ranch, was chosen to reflect the strong environment of the Texas Hill Country. The pieces are installed along the entry road of the project and throughout the roadways and rolling hills.

While it is not competitive in spirit, a panel of peers in the arts determines acceptance of sculptures for display. Sculptures should be large-scale (suggested minimum height or width -10-12 feet) with materials suited for the outdoors Texas Hill Country, where winds at times are a factor. The subject matter is left to the artists, however, strong, non-representational pieces will fit best with the natural environment. Send slides, CD or a website if you would like to have your work considered. Please include the medium, size, and dates of availability to Lorraine@Benini.com or by mail to The Benini Galleries and Sculpture Ranch, 377 Shiloh Road, Johnson City, Texas 78636.

PUBLIC ART CHATTANOOGA ANNOUNCES INSTALLATION OF TWO SCULPTURES AT JEFFERSON HEIGHTS PARK
Chattanooga, Tenn. – Public Art Chattanooga is pleased to announce that two sculptures have been installed at Jefferson Heights Park. Works by local artists Samuel Burns and R. Michael Wimmer were selected in the spring by an art selection panel composed of Public Art Chattanooga Committee members, District 7 Public Art Committee members, neighborhood residents, and professionals involved in the redevelopment of the park. The sculptures were installed in July and will be on view through December 2011. They are being funded through a generous grant from the Lyndhurst Foundation.
Samuel Burns’s sculpture is entitled “Geometry in a Box” and made of painted aluminum. The piece is part of an ongoing series of welded abstract geometrical forms. Michael Wimmer’s work is called “Balance of Things, Past and Present.” Wimmer’s mixed media piece is his first public art project and speaks to the history of Jefferson Heights Park as the former site of Jefferson Street Elementary School (later named the William J. Davenport School).
The sculptures are welcome additions to Jefferson Heights Park, which has been newly redesigned to include a pavilion, community garden beds, walking paths, a picnic and playground area, and a volleyball court.

I was originally trained in photography but over the years, sculpture has become a big influence in my artwork, which is mainly about exposing a distorted reality originating from contemporary myth and deep-rooted traditional legend and exploring the varying scales of abstraction. The ability of the mind and eye to bend reality and the potential of such altered perception to affect society as well as the individual, are explored through varying degrees of my abstract expression. Working in both medias is similar with the way light and shadow plays an important part in the appearance and feel of my art.

Samuel Burns spent ten years working for the North Carolina Zoological Park in their design department, designing and constructing animal exhibits along with model construction as part of the construction plans. Later, commercial design and construction of artificial rock and waterscapes continued his path towards artistic construction of sculpture. In 1999 he started full time as a sculptor and photographer using primarily steel and aluminum. In 2007, after being accepted into Art Move Chattanooga, he moved to and set up a studio and home and is now working in large scale sculpture of mostly aluminum.

"Evolution in Gray" by Samuel Burns

The sculptures will be installed on August 1, and an artist-led Inaugural Sculpture Walk is scheduled for August 2. Self-guided walking tour brochures will be located at many key downtown businesses and public buildings. Artist-led tours for organized groups and school children will be available on request. The "People's Choice" voting will commence with the opening of the exhibit and continue through September. The winner will be announced in the November issue of A! Magazine.

This is the second year of the Art in Public Places project. Six sculptures were mounted in last year's competition and placed at the new library, at the Bristol Tennessee Courthouse, and on both sides of State Street. The original exhibit drew a warm and lively response from a cross-section of citizens, including art students from Vance and St. Anne's Middle Schools, and was termed a groundbreaking success. Organized and implemented by AAME's Art in Public Places Committee with the cooperation of both city governments, the project is funded completely by private donations from area businesses and individuals.

Samuel Burns at PLAnET aLTEred

Large scale sculpture of steel, wood, stone and aluminum is the focus of Samuel Burns’ creative energy. Abstract forms of cut and welded metal soar across open spaces dancing with light and shadow. “Nature has always been a large influence on my work, whether plant, animal or mineral,” Sam said. An award-winning local artist whose works can be seen in many public spaces including Chattanooga and in private collections, has a twisted steel piece called “Elegant” currently on display at Planet Altered. Created from steel it was influenced by Sam’s love of trees. The shape, reminiscent of a tree trunk and limbs has a soft intertwining appearance which reflects light and shadow belying the hardness of steel. Planet Altered is delighted to offer Samuel’s work to the public and grateful he has several pieces which are small enough to fit indoors. We will have “Elegant” and more of Sam’s work in our gallery through April. We are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00am to 5:00 pm and Saturdays from 8:00am to 11:00am.

Southport Artist Samuel E. Burns Exhibits in New York

Southport Artist Samuel E. Burns Exhibits in New York

Press Release

December 27, 2006 - Southport, North Carolina (NC) - Trained photographer and emergent sculptor, Samuel E. Burns, channels the raw power of his imagination through the lens of his camera and metals he welds into serpentine abstraction. Finding through both media equally satisfying means of exploring sensory perception, Burns uses his hands to atomize matter and materialize ether. With a responsive eye and sensitive touch, Burns shapes invisible dimensions of reality into vortices of steel, while reducing solid phenomena to pixel values. Surveying the world largely through his camera, Burns captures and reproduces that which seizes his attention: sometimes true to life, other times reinterpreting or deconstructing life through digital manipulation. The multi-talented artist has earned recognition for his striking sculptural designs, with his photographs transforming what we believe to be sensible and concrete into something illusory and nebulous. Samuel E. Burns is a member of the Tri-State Sculptors Education Association. He currently resides in Southport, North Carolina.

From January 26 to February 15 at Agora Gallery, 530 West 25th Street, Chelsea, New York. Opening hours: 11am-6pm. Reception February 1st, 6-8 PM. Please visit http://www.agora-gallery.com/ArtistInvite/Samuel_E._Burns.aspx for more information.

Embrace, by Samuel E. Burns from Chattanooga, TN

Embrace, by Samuel E. Burns from Chattanooga, TN
I am starting to really love Linkedin. For a long time, I ignored it. Facebook and twitter and my email seemed to be enough of a social network for me. But then I started cruising around Linkedin, and found that there are many, many opportunities to link up with area artists even if you don't personally know them. Samuel Burns is an abstract sculptor and photographer working out of Chattanooga and we linked up this afternoon when I accepted his invitation.

For a long time, I didn't embrace abstract art. But then I became a jeweler and well, jewelry is really small scale abstract sculpture, isn't it? I have a good friend that is a jewelry designer, and damn good too. But she worked for a local sculpture artist and got smitten by big metal. I can understand how artists are led to other mediums once they get the hang of just one. Which proves the point in starting anything...follow that flirt and your life and experiences expand rapidly!

Just to illustrate how synchronicity works, I just finished putting up my "About" blurb on this blog banner about connecting to others, whether they are friends, family or strangers, in order to hear their stories and deepen your own understanding of creativity. In this case, a virtual stranger on Linkedin just minutes ago made me stop and consider how important abstract thought and imagery are to our understanding of emotions. Emotions are not something that have a physical form, are they. We see the results of emotions, whether it be anger, joy or love...in people (expressions of crying, laughing) or in objects (artwork) but we often have to resort to abstract visuals to convey emotion when we aren't moving through emotion ourselves.

How incredibly cool is that?

Samuel Burns Sculpture Installed on Southern Village Green

‘Redwood’ sculpture by Samuel Burns
CHAPEL HILL–Southern Village is participating in The Town of Chapel Hill’s Sculpture Visions program, a town-sponsored outdoor sculpture exhibition that runs from October 2009 to October 2010. Sculptor Samuel E. Burns installed “Redwood” today, an 18-foot-tall aluminum sculpture. It will remain on The Village Green for one year. The sculpture is lighted at night, so that it can viewed and enjoyed in the evening.

Most of the sculptures selected for the exhibition are on town property, but the village center developers, D.R. Bryan, John Fugo and Christine Edwards, believed that The Village Green would be an excellent venue for public art.

Burns is a North Carolina native who had a career working in construction, including exhibit design and construction at the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro. When he hurt his knee three years ago, he decided to devote himself to sculpture. Currently he lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he participates in an artist-in-residence program.

“I named this sculpture ‘Redwood’ because its form reminds me of the canopy of a giant redwood tree,” Burns said. The sculpture was recently on exhibit in Johnson City, Texas, and Burns drove it to Chapel Hill for the installation. “I am pleased with this location. The trees and the buildings in Southern Village frame it beautifully.”

Southern Village is home to another sculpture from the 2004-2005 Sculpture Visions program. ‘Golden Portal’, created by Wayne Trapp, is an eight-foot-high modern expression of the classic arch. The Golden Portal is in front of the building at 300 Market Street.
